Description: In partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation, California’s Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) provides free shade trees to residences to help reduce energy use for air conditioning. More than 600,000 trees have been planted since 1990.
Planting and maintaining urban trees can also result in carbon sequestration, improved air quality, enhanced stormwater management, increased community resilience, and improved quality of life.
Goal: Urban tree planting to reduce energy use by increasing tree shade
