Pump testing and variable frequency drives

Description: Pump Testing – Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) in Riverside County, CA works with Southern California Edison (SCE) to regularly test the performance of its pumps. Testing ensures they are operating efficiently and reduces energy use.

EMWD has been participating in SCE’s pump test program for more than 15 years. Savings of greater than 10.4 million kilowatt-hours over more than seven years have been achieved; SCE provided nearly $850,000 in incentives to offset equipment and facility upgrade costs.

Additionally, EMWD has invested in Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) – replacing or upgrading equipment with VFDs allows for continuous matching of motor speed to load requirements for pumps, thus reducing energy use.

Goal: Pump testing and variable frequency drives to increase energy efficiency in water agency operations

Measurement: Kilowatt-hours (varies per pump)
